Treasure in My Heart

Why, I have it right now. This very minute. And that means that all those things that pester me like gnats, but won’t mean anything twenty or a hundred years from now, are nothing. They’re as meaningless as dry, decaying leaves driven by the wind.

What did I have? As a believer, John 6:47 clearly states that I have (present tense) eternal life: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

Of course, I knew this all along. But this truth had become dull, ordinary. After all, I’d heard it ever since I was a little tot.

But that doesn’t make it any less amazing. It took meditating on this verse to jolt me back into the awareness of the treasure I possessed. We get excited about nice homes, new cars, far-away travels, and coveted honors. But is anything more important than possessing eternal life?

You may wonder, “That’s so far in the future. How can I get excited about that today?”

Because the treasure dwarfs everything else. Yes, everything. Physical pain, relational stresses, schedule demands, emotional concerns—everything. The truth packed in that short verse set me free from obsessing about the things I didn’t like. It put the things of today into perspective. It helped me enjoy the day and be more enjoyable. It helped me treasure the old-fashioned truths I have heard so often.
